Tantalum Powders, Ideal for Additive Manufacturing

Tantalum Powders, Ideal for Additive Manufacturing

GAM Additive Products are ideal for a wide variety of markets including medical, energy, defense, aerospace, automotive, industrial and electronics. New designs and research are occurring across a broad variety of industries and applications.

Applications

GAM Additive powders are particularly suited for:

1.     Highly complex printed parts, including open-mesh orthopedic structures and dental implants

2.     Printed process equipment for harsh environments like space, artillery, chemical processing, energy

3.     Cold spray for harsh environments like space, artillery, chemical processing, energy

4.     Additive, cold spray part repair

For medical implants, independent third-party scientific studies have indicated tantalum has high biocompatibility, and as a pure metal, no measurable toxicity and possesses osteointegration and elastic modulus properties comparable to bone properties.  Read a brief review of tantalum for medical applications.

GAM Additive Process

GAM Additive material production starts with electron beam (EB) melting of high-purity tantalum and proceeds through the comminution and sizing steps necessary to create angular powders of desired size distributions while maintaining chemical purity. Angular powders can be customized for use in both cold spray coating and 3D metal printing applications. Angular powders can be further processed via plasma into spherical powders ideal for printing on any of the AM platforms.

Types of Additive Products

Spherical Powders

  • Ultra high purity (up to 6N), high flow, spherical powders of  tantalum and other refractory metals and their alloys.
  • Plasma spheroidized powders are inherently free of voids and without satellites.
  • Suitable for most AM processing including laser and e-beam powder bed fusion, direct energy deposition, BinderJet, and MIM.
  • Using GAM Additive proprietary technology, oxygen and other gases can be customized to meet application requirements. Particle size distributions can be tailored for specific applications.
  • Good printed part density, with greater than 99.5 area % achieved in testing.
  • Developed for use in a broad array of applications including medical, defense, military, aerospace, space, industrial, energy and chemical processing.
  • GAM Additive is continuously collaborating with the AM community for further powder development.

Angular Powders

  • Angular powders produced by GAM Additive for additive manufacturing and cold spray applications are up to 6N (99.9999%) pure. The angular powder particles are fully dense.
  • Through use of GAM Additive’s proprietary technology, the angular powders have relatively low oxygen levels suitable for a variety of applications based on independent third party research.
  • Particle size distributions can be customized for applications.
  • GAM Additive produces angular powders for use in a broad array of applications including defense, military, aerospace, space,  industrial, energy and chemical processing.
  • Currently producing a variety of angular powders including pure tantalum, tantalum alloys (Ta2.5W, Ta10W) and niobium. GAM Additive is open to collaborating with the AM community for other metal powder development needs.
